Note: These chairs are apparently identical to chairs attributed to Phyfe at the Edison Institute Henry Ford Museum Dearborn Michigan and relate to those in a suite of eighteen dining chairs made by Duncan Phyfe for Charles March and conserved by the Vanderpoel House of History in Kinderhook New York. The front legs on the lot offered here and the Edison Institute chairs are highly carved in contrast to the finely reeded sabre legs on the March examples. Reference: McClelland. An American Classical Carved Mahogany Sofa c. 1840 attributed to Phyfe & Son New York ogee crest rail scrolled arms molded seat rail flat disc feet flamed veneers throughout height 36 in. width 87 in. depth 27 in. Note: The form proportion and figured veneers on this sofa point to the influence of the workshop of Duncan Phyfe in the 1830's in what is known as the "Grecian Plain" style. Sofas and couches attributed to Phyfe with scroll arms and elliptical feet similar to those seen here include those made for Samuel Foote now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 66.221.1); a couch from the household of Eliza Phyfe Vail now in the collection of Virginia Gould; a couch made for John Manning still at Millford Plantation Pinewood South Carolina; and a daybed also owned by John Manning now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 2006.399a-r). WORKSHOP OF DUNCAN PHYFE (ATTR) GRECIAN TASTE SOFA Rare recamier or Grecian taste sofa attributed to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, New York City, ca. 1805, with brass-nailed black horsehair upholstery within mahogany reeded frame and scrolling reeded arms (maple secondary wood support rails), the seat rail with ribbon-bound sheaves of wheat and drapery festoons in low relief, the head with curving armrest, the foot with oval bolster with exceptionally well-carved rosette facing, the whole above splayed "cornucopia" legs on parcel gilt hairy paw feet with brass casters. 33" H x 90" L x 27" D x 16" seat Provenance: Property from an American Collection at 1040 Park Avenue Note: The offered lot bears comparison to a recamier with similar carving in the collection of George and Linda Kauffman, illustrated in Michael Flanagan, "American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection", fig. 58. It is also comparable to an example currently in the American trade. All three sofas are united by their unique proportions as well as the uncommonly large, varied, and well-carved rosettes at the foot of the sofa, which may be by the same hand.

Note: The configuration of the back of these chairs centered by a segmented cross is seen in well-known examples from the Phyfe workshop including a suite of twelve chairs made for Thomas Cornell Pearsall now in the "Richmond" period room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a suite conserved by the House of History in Kinderhook and chairs from the collections of Berry Tracy and Peter Terian. A Rare American Classical Inlaid Satinwood Astragal End Work Table c. 1815 attributed to Duncan Phyfe New York hinged lid enclosing an interior fitted with a writing panel looking glass and two demilune trays; the frieze faced as a drawer tambour door below reeded urn standard saber legs with waterleaf carving brass paw feet casters height 31 in. width 25 in. depth 12 1/2 in. Note: This rare example is part of a very small group of satinwood work tables related to the Phyfe workshop. Others include a table purchased from Phyfe in 1813 by Victor du Pont for his niece Victorine du Pont Bauduy for her marriage and now conserved by the Hagley Museum and Library Wilmington Delaware. A second table is conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1986.84.2).
